Cantorum Thursday All Saints Church, Ponsonby Colin Newel 09 420 7271 candcnewel@gmail.com http://www.cantorum.webplus.net Link to NZCF Site
Cantorum is an Auckland chamber choir of around twenty very experienced singers, which specialises in the performance of Renaissance and Baroque music, both a cappella and accompanied. It was formed in March 2014 and membership of Cantorum is substantially made up of former members of the very successful Auckland chamber choir Musica Sacra, which built up a strong reputation for the quality of its performing during its period of operation from 1998 to 2013. Cantorum is aiming to follow in this tradition as it grows.

Cantorum is busy preparing for its next concert, hot on the tails of our recent sold-out collaboration with Cantemus Choir at St Luke’s Church in Remuera. On Saturday 27 May 2017 at 7.30pm, Cantorum will present the ever-favourite Fauré Requiem. French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) composed and revised his Requiem in D minor between 1887 and 1900. It is the best-known of his large works, with its focus on eternal rest and consolation. Fauré's parents died in the mid–1880s, but this does not seem to be his reason for composing the work. Fauré said, “My Requiem wasn’t written for anything - for pleasure, if I may call it that!” The popularity of the Requiem belies its complexity; as a familiar piece of music, it is easy to expect performances to be relatively predictable, but it is not an easy piece to perform well. Conductor Iain Tetley will be investigating innovative ways to get new colours and ideas out of the music, so that Cantorum’s performance will be a little different to expectations. The Requiem will be accompanied on organ by Janet Gibbs, and the soloists, baritone Chalium Poppy and treble Luke Shackleton, will add great gravitas to the work. The first half of the concert will feature unaccompanied Renaissance music by Palestrina, Byrd and Philips. Palestrina’s Missa aeterna Christi munera is one of his later Masses, and shows his compositional style at the height of his creative powers. It is characterized by the clarity of the vocal writing, the interplay among the parts and the fluency and charm of its melodic lines. Interspersed among the Mass movements we will perform two pieces by Peter Philips, Cantantibus organis and O Crux Splendidior, and one by William Byrd, Alleluia, ascendit Deus. Byrd and Philips were, of course, both masters in their field, and these pieces illustrate the effervescence of chordal writing and polyphony, and the gloriously fluid harmonic shifts and wave-like dynamics of legato unaccompanied writing. Cantorum looks forward very much to seeing you at our next concert. Concert details for your diary are as follows: What:      Cantorum concert: “Fauré Requiem" Where:    All Saints Church, 284 Ponsonby Road When:     7.30 pm Saturday 27 May 2017 Tickets:   $25 before the concert from Tom Chignell 09 630 4315 or cantorum.choir@gmail.com Door Sales $30 (Students $10) Cash Only Parking:  In the church carpark, and nearby street parking

Research is showing that singing may also help to 'rewire'; the brain after brain injury, and so could help with conditions like aphasia. We sing a wide variety of well-known songs so you're sure to know some. Whatever your condition, we aim to enjoy singing and have some fun!

The Graduate Choir NZ, which has been referred to as "one of Auckland's best-kept secrets", has earned an international reputation for the performance of choral music at its best, for programming which is accessible and universal in appeal, for the musical integrity it brings to this repertoire, and for the warmth and breadth of its sound. Established in 2001 by director Terence Maskell, its membership comprises singers from all parts of Auckland. The choir is essentially "youthful" in character, with singers still at school, in the workforce, or in tertiary education. In 2003, the choir was awarded the Grand Prix as the outstanding choir of the inaugural "Classic Sing" competition in NZ; as a result of which it was invited to perform at the Association of British Choral Directors' Convention in the UK in 2005. This highly successful tour included performances in Guildford as featured artist at the convention of the Association of British Choral Directors, at the chapel of King's College, Cambridge, Exeter College, Oxford and Canterbury Cathedral. In 2007 the choir undertook a highly successful tour of main North Island centres, including a major recital in the Cathedral of St Paul, Wellington. The choir has regularly performed with distinction in and around Auckland, including before President Bill Clinton and on numerous occasions before NZ Prime Ministers and the Governor General. In recent years the choir has performed on several occasions with The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra cementing an exciting and distinguished musical collaboration in the city. A Concert FM and television artist, the choir has produced three highly-acclaimed CD recordings: "My spirit sang all day" [Atoll 105], "A sound came from heaven" [Atoll 407] and "Sing in Exultation!" [Atoll 308].

Whangarei Harmony Chorus Monday 7pm Brass Band Hall, Dyer Street Christine Bettesworth 09 432 2873 christine.bettesworth@gmail.com http://whangareiharmony.org.nz Link to NZCF Site
Whangarei Harmony Chorus is a well-established singing group with a wide repertoire of barbershop and popular songs. Barbershop may make you picture mustachioed men in Boaters and striped jackets - but no – that is not us. Women’s Barbershop has been around since the 1940’s and in New Zealand since the early 80’s. It has evolved a lot over the years, quite dramatically in the last 10 years. Whangarei Harmony chartered with our parent organisation, Sweet Adelines, nearly 20 years ago and we have had many successes over those years. Singing songs from the 30’s & 40’s is still an important part of our repertoire, especially for competition performances, but we are often found to be singing music that you might normally hear on your radio! Whangarei Harmony Chorus are looking for a new Musical Director to take charge of our chorus. We are seeking someone with a strong musical background who is keen to learn the barbershop craft and who can help us to grow musically and in numbers. The position comes with a small honorarium and all related costs are paid for by the Chorus. There are many opportunities to attend national & international training courses run by Sweet Adelines and a Director who is keen to up-skill will find that Sweet Adeline has programs to suit all interests from Directing to Music Arranging and Judging. NZ women’s barbershop is among the best in the world and we have Chorus’s and quartets competing internationally every year. Our new Director should be enthusiastic and enjoy Performance as well as the challenges of Competition. We rehearse on Monday evenings at the Brass Band Hall in Dyer Street from 7pm. Please contact Jan Hart on 09 432 1818 or email janted1@xtra.co.nz for further information.
